Mike Wankum

Mike Wankum is a staff meteorologist at WCVB-TV in Boston, Massachusetts. He has been with the station since December 2006. Previously, he was chief meteorologist at WLVI-TV Channel 56 from July 1993 to December 2006. He has won nine Emmys at WLVI-TV and one Emmy at WTVR-TV in Richmond, Virginia. WLVI-TV was sold by Tribune Broadcasting to Sunbeam Broadcasting in December 2006.

Wankum has in his career provided weather reports in the Boston Herald, and on several radio stations, including WZLX (100.7), WBUR (90.9), and Kiss 108. His printed forecasts were featured in BostonNOW, a discontinued free daily abbreviated newspaper. Before coming to Boston, he worked as a chief meteorologist at WTVR-TV in Richmond, Virginia 1990-1993, and at KTIV-TV in his native Iowa1980-1990.

Wankum has served has chairman of the Chernobyl Children Project USA, and has assisted in a number of Boston area charities. Including Boy Scouts of America, Easter Seals, MDA, Tufts-New England Medical Center and the Floating Hospital for Children. As well as local animal shelters and nursing homes. He is a lecturer at area schools.

A graduate of Briar Cliff University, Wankum lives in the town of Scituate, located on the South Shore of Massachusetts. He is a Member of the American Meteorological Society and holds the Society’s Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) designation.
